cruise control help
Well, I've figured there's something shorting in the steering column, which is causing my problem. A few weeks ago, I replaced a blown fuse for the horns and this morning I noticed that the horns aren't working again. I'm betting the fuse blew, so I guess I'll have to tear into the column and track down a short.
Just an update and an FYI - I repaired my Cruise Control yesterday.
As I previously explained, it got to the point where I could turn the Cruise On, but after a moment or two it would turn Off, after which it would not turn on again. Also, assuming it stayed On I could not Set the speed. Some issues leading up to this include having had to press very hard on the power button to turn Cruise Control On.
After a great deal of thinking, I bought a Borg-Warner replacement at O'Reilly Auto Parts for $47. A three minute swap later, and voila -- barely pressing the On/Off button turns the system On. Barely pressing either the Set or Resume buttons immediately activates either function.
So, just some food for thought if anyone out there is having Cruise Control issues.

If you have a haynes manual and a volt meter, there's a pretty easy way to check if it's good or not.
