so what are rockers for? just curious bc im completely new to v8. ive been driving a 2.3L 4 banger since 05 until last year, so i really didnt pay attention to performance or power until i got my new truck. btw dan, valves look good. i like the orange accent look. whats the benefit of having 1.7 rockers? how much knowledge/experience did you have with rockers or valves before you intalled them? v/r

first off..is that v/r "very respectfully?" damn military hahaha.

The 1.7s, act as a little bigger cam, giving your stock came more duration (a little). Theyre also more efficient because theyre roller type lifters, less friction = more power.

And theyre an easy install.

Some comic relief:

1. I got nervous when the engine would not start. I had some trouble putting the spark plug wires in the distributor. BECAUSE I HAD THE ENGINE SIDES MIXED UP!!!

D'OH

2. I broke my coolant temp sensor putting the heater hose back on. So I bought another one. not a bad d'oh, but still a d'oh.

I will not be done until tomorrow. I am just going to flush the radiator today, and tomorrow I am getting her ready for a picture.

I like the way she purrs though. I half thought I was not going to be able to pull this one off.

Prolly just my lack of knowledge here but..how would it run too hot from the 160. If it never closed, then coolant would constantly be flowing freely, wouldnt that prevent it from being too hot? I know a lot of ppl who run 160s have problems running to cold. Its supposed to open when the engine gets to that degree. It opens sooner, IE 160 instead of 195, keeping the engine a little cooler.

Either way, i have the 180, along with everything you have except the intake manifold, and I run great. Actually, lookint to get electric fans soon, as soon as i stop pouring money into my bike.

Tape on the wires helps too...

160* is too cold for our computer. You'll throw a code.

The 1.7 rockers create more lift, or how wide open the valve gets at peak lift. Duration is how long the valve stays open, and can only be changed by actually swapping cams.

Camaro's/Firebirds had woefully inadequate colling systems from the factory, even with dual electric fans. (which will NOT run if you are going over 40 miles an hour.) The colder stat would work fine, until all the coolant got up to temp, then, the inefficiency of the cooling system would rear its ugly head. These cars came from the factory with 195* stats..... and with the thin aluminum radiator..... well, you can see what would happen..

Also, with the coolant circulating full time, it doesn't spend enough time in the radiator to shed much heat...... so, eventually it reaches equilibrium (relatively stable temp) somewhere north of 160.

Yeah, the radiator could not support cooling the fluid to less than 160.

Basically the coolant kept getting hotter and hotter. The coolant was not able to stay in the radiator long enough to cool down. Hence why people used to underdrive the water pump so the coolant would flow more slowly and spend more time in the radiator.

I even tried restrictor washers. That is old school.

yeah, that damn thing was the bane of my existence. It was a 1986 IROC with a crate 350. I ran it hot because of a bad water pump. Then I had a ridiculous camshaft installed, with heads that required custom length pushrods. Had everything on that car, only to get it back from the shop to find massive blow by (caused by running hot). the TC cover gasket and oil pan were leaking because of the blow by.

I parted it out. Lost about 8 grand (not counting the purchase cost).

Actually, the MSD that was in that camaro is now in my dodge, so the memory lives on Reminds me to not change anything unless its broke. Which I ignored the past 2 weekends (MSD, injectors, 1.7s, plenum plate)
