here's the cat on my hyundai when it broke off the manifold one time... it looks like a screen there but is actually like that straight through.... which would explain why you'd think there was a screen on both ends, although I'm not saying you didn't see a screen, I'm not sure about these cats...

That very well could be what I saw. I just took a peek in there afterwards and saw it. I just assumed it was a screen because when I shook the cat it rattled like no other but nothing ever fell out.

When mine went, it rattled every now and then around the same rpm. Mainly it would make a high pitched chirping sound during idle/takeoff also. Either way, if you hit it and it rattles looks like it's time to replace it.

im having a muffler shop weld mine in on tuesday or ASAP afer the holiday. shouldn't be expensive to do at all. they just have to remove old cat and weld in the hi flow one. should take about 20-30mins. IMO i would go with the hi flow cat bc it ain't jerry rigged and half ***, its more professional/clean. the pipes leading up to cat are 3" but after the cat is go to 2.5" and then after the tire finishes at 3". jasonw explained it well. the muffler shop just puts a reducer on after the cat.

jasonw helped me out on this issue. i ordered mine from summitracing and the cat+SH=$83.
what cat did you order?

i got this one. PN 94009. This is for a 99-01 dodge ram i believe. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-94009/

for a 97 this is what you would need to get. PN 23285. maybe you could find one another place if you dont want this one http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-23285/

just called a local muffler shop here (K&C Muffler) and it will be $60 to cut the cat off and weld new one on. cant do it til tomorrow though bc they are swamped. the other shop said $50 but he won't know until he looks at it and it could be more...BS. i guess im going with K&C, they welded my 40s on last year so i guess i can deal with 60$..

Man, for 60 bucks it better come with dinner and a movie. I suppose it's not too bad though, considering there was talk earlier about having to drop the pipes due to tight fit. Let us know how you like it.

after i changed my exhaust i had the same rattle and thought it was the cat, upon further inspection i found it was the pipe support about midway throught the cab, the people who did the exhaust before swung it up and out of the way instead of running the pipes through it. it was sitting on top of the pipe making a rattle. i just cut it off and all has been good.
