I agree, Synthetic will not harm your engine. If your budget allows for it, your motor will like synthetic better for the long haul.

Exactly, I fail to see how high performance engines like synth., but our trucks seem to cook with it.

That being said, im sure there is a differance in the quality of the oils people use, what the PO has done as far as maint.

Every year I do a quick tear down of my engine and clean it. First time I did this my rockers (for example) looked like crap. I almost bought new ones right away they looked so bad, but I decided to clean them up. With my regular maint., oil changes, cleanings..etc they look great. This was before i switched to 1.7s mind you..those btw still look like they were the day I got them.....just covered in oil.

Give me a brand new engine and I'll run Quaker State in it three years, rarely change the oil, and then break open the engine. That stuff will cook and the paraffin will make a mess of the internals the likes few here have seen.

I also disagree with the above statement that at oil changing time, Dino oil will not come out black. I'm 41 and have involved in oil changes in one form or another since I was 7, and I've never seen Dino oil come out in any other color than black.

Im not saying dino oil wont come out black, I said the synth. oil was coming out cleaner than the dino oil. You can still see dirt and grim in the dino oil, my point was that my engine is running cleaner with the synth.

And I was also stating that the cooking on the engine was from lack of maintenance, not from the oil itself.

My truck has always had synthetic oil in it. I bought it used, but the PO has EVERY SINGLE servicing. He had a new fuel pump, water pump and multiple transfer case seal fixes. Every oil change said "Mobil 1 10W30."

I followed suit, but when i added synthetic, I did 4 quarts mobil 1 or quaker state syn, PLUS the lucas oil additive. My last oil change (before the plenum instal) was valvoline syntec blend. THat is the closest I had to dino oil.

WELL. My lifter valley looked brand new. no baking whatsoever. My valvesprings springs had absolutely NO crud on them.

I have never had lifter tick, but that could have been from the lucas oil stabilizer.

I think it was just the lucas oil additive. ALSO, I change my oil every 3K OR 3 months. Whichever comes first. THat might be a good reason for the cleanliness. Time is also a likker of oil. There are so many chemicals that get into our oil (Water, fuel) that the longer they sit, the more the composition of the oil changes.

SO, I think that changing the oil 3K or 3 months will keep your engine clean.

I see. From all of the multiple quoting up there I got a bit lost reading the message.

You could stretch your oil changes to 6,000 with no ill effects. I do for mine and I had the intake off 60,000 after rebuilding and the lifter galley looked great.

Thats why the dummy made it a question.

I run synthetic and dont give a crap. This truck would run 300-400,000 miles on Valvoline conventional and Fram filters. Napa has their full synthetic on sale for 3.19/quart. Stock up.

From my understanding there isn't much advantage if any of running synthetic in our Rams per the information I have read on here.
