Bad day for my 97
Dodge transmissions are widely know to pieces of junk. I am not surprised that you went through your transmission seal. I am sure if a ford or chevy was in the same situation as you ram was, they would be perfectly fine.
I know of plenty of Fords and Chev's that have been left stranded because their auto trannies blew too. Auto's don't belong in real trucks in my opinion they simply can't take the abuse a good manual can. Seems to me that your just slagging Dodge owners !!!
Why dont you ask these guys:

I have a 97 1500 4x4 with a 318. I have had it since it had 36,000 miles on it. I got the truck when I was 16 and didn't know very much about maintaining a vehicle. My truck now has 235,00 miles on it.
All I have replaced is
front wheel bearings at 210,000
coolant system at 225,000
cat at 134,000
fuel pump at 230,000
So in my opinion my 97 is a da*n good truck. The engine and transmission still run strong and I feel she will last me to atleast 300,000 maybe more (knock on wood).
