actually the rubber plug is on the rear diff.

your 4wd has a dana 44 front end. on the front side of the diff cover, about halfway up is a screw in, square head plug. unscrew this and fill the differential up until it runs out the hole.

you can use about any kind of gear oil, including 80w90, 85w90, 90w, or the expensive 75w140. it doesn't really matter what kind you use. what does matter is that you keep oil in it. to refill, put your finger over the spout and tilt the bottle up and above the steering rods, then shove the tip in the hole and squeeze. totatl capacity is about 2-1/2 quarts. you're probably not real low, maybe 1/2 quart.

you can tolerate leaking seals for as long as you wish, provided you keep it full of oil. if only one side is leaking, you can park overnight on a 2x8 to reduce the amount that leaks out.

It's actually easier to get your stuff in there when it's wet.

And if you DO go thru water deeper than your hubs, just have a look at the fluid later. If it is milky, or obviously contaminated, change it.

Ive had the same issue for two years. Every time i change my oil i have them refill fluid. Since the truck is barely driven only once has it needed a tiny amount of fluid. Also in the summer the seal with the heat will expand and leak more, ive driven in winter and the leak is minimal to none. you might also try parking with the wheel facing one way and see if leaks more or less vice versa.
