Default Truck won't shut off

This morning I jumped in the truck and it started fine. Ran to the store, and when I came out the battery was dead (only in there for about 5 minutes). Had someone jump me, and went to the parts store. They checked the battery and told me it was bad. So I bought a new one (never turned off the truck). Got home, turned the key back and pulled it out of the ignition, went to get out of the truck and that's when I realized it was still running! No key in it, in the OFF position, truck still running. Had to pull the Automatic Shutdown Relay to get it to shut off, and then disconnected my already dead battery, because the dash lights where still on.

Oh, and the steering wheel still moves freely, with the key in the OFF position...

sound like your ignition cylinder is at fault if it's not locking the wheel either... can you shift out of park when it's off also?

That's a standard brake interlock. No taking it out of park without applying the brakes. A "safety" measure..... If you can still do that with the key in your pocket, you need to pull apart the steering column, and see just what the heck is going on in there.

yup you must have something broken or unhooked in there, your key isn't actually turning anything when you turn it off. From the sounds of things I'm surprised it'll still start it... Does it still shut off your radio etc.?

It didn't shut off any of the electronics, no. I also misinterpreted, I could not take it out of park when the key was in the off ignition, even though the truck was still running. I replaced the ignition lock cylinder, and it turns on and shuts off now. But the steering wheel still doesn't lock.

How come threads stay open for years with no activity? This is the only forum that i have seen this on. Usually will get closed after about 6 months with no activity.
