engine swap question
hi i recently bought a 2001 parts truck real cheap its a 360 automatic which is shot of course but i have a 96 ram with a blown 318 standard my question is is the 360 a direct swap? i no the computers need changed out but is it that simple? cause id like to get the truck back to good running condition then part out the 2001 dodge out after the swap. thanks for your help
The flex plate would need to be swapped. Also, I know the 01 had only 1 speed sensor on the tail shaft (OD unit) and the 96 had 2. You'll have to work that out, or swap the tail shaft. Other then that, your good to go. I can only assume that this question wasn't answered ASAP because it's on the top 5 questions that is almost always asked.
EDIT: Oops. didn't see that part about it being converted from a auto to standard.

thanks for your help and i no its a common question and i figured it was that simple just wanted to make sure that there wasnt anything extra with these years like one little difference between a 96 swap and like a 97 and soo on .... so thanks guys
a couple more items you need to know.
the 2001 will likely have a blown plenum, so you'll want to fix that before you install the engine.
the 2001 pcm likely won't work right if you try and install it in your 96. you'll probably need a 96 5.9 std pcm. check junkyard or refurb'ed pcm sites.
i don't know how this applies to your manual trans, but the 5.9 is externally balanced and the 5.2 in internally balanced. (or vice versa...) this is a problem with the flexplate on the auto, but i don't know how it applies to you manual. so check that out. the easiest way is to cross reference part numbers of the flywheel between your 96 5.2 and 01 5.9
your 96 may have an egr valve, and other intake sensor differences from the 01. (such as 1 vs 2 temp sensors). you may want to move your 96 intake to the 01 engine.
do you have an egr valve. you might want to delete/block it off.

i will prob just swap the intake manifolds cause i just put a new plenum gasket in it bout 3k miles ago i think that would make the swap easier and i dont thing it has an egr valve on the 96 but il have to look tomorrow and il have to find out about the pcm options

i believe that i read somewhere on this site that the nv3500 trans (thats the1/2 ton 5.2 std. trans) wont be able to handle the torque from the 5.9
but if you could find a nv4500 (from a 3/4 ton 5.9 std) it should work.
but some one will come along and correct me if im wrong.

it's all in opinion..my personal experience with the nv3500 was it was junk and it didnt last more then a week after i put the 5.9L in..first threw the 5th gear then reverse then the syncro's went shortly afterwards..
