Default Flushing coolant in Engine block.

So I have alot of potential rust deposits in the engine block and want to flush them out.

I dont have my new radiator in yet, but I was wondering if I could start flushing the engine with a hose under pressure or maybe add some CLR as a prestarter to attack the rust, or should I just button the engine up with the thermostat and radiator and do use Prestone super radiator cleaner.

You need to have everything hooked up:

1. Drain coolant (with radiator on)
2. Fill with water and NAPA descaler. Prestone cleaner is not as good.
3. Run engine for 30 minutes with heat on HIGH
4. Drain, fill with water and run for 5 minutes
5. Drain and add 50/50 coolant/water, or whatever percentage you use.

Getting the truck to OPERATING TEMPERATURE and running it for THIRTY MINUTES is necessary for the descaler to get the deposits out.

You cannot do it with a garden hose.

ALSO, if you button the engine up and run it...the coolant would not flow and it would overheat after about 5 minutes. Just about every gasket on your engine would have to be replaced (Intake, water pump and head gaskets).

If you feel like downloading the service manual on this thread, it outlines the factory procedure for draining, flushing and refilling your truck.

Yeah, I have that, and it was a little too basic in what it said.

Drain cooling system and refill with water. Run engine with radiator cap installed until upper radiator hose is hot. Stop engine and drain water from system. If water is dirty, fill system with water, run engine and drain system. Repeat until water drains clean.
