farmboy has had his truck for a week and hes 16 years old. I think he knows. No offense to you farmboy, but there are many people on this forum with many many years of experience in driving and fixing these trucks here. I know you are new to driving and new to this forum, but before you jump all over place, use this forum to learn.

The 46Re transmission is not that bad of a transmission,Unless you want a 45RFE or 545RFE transmission. Or you can go backwards to the old 46RH transmission. Has long as you take care of the maint on the box,it will last. I overhaul mine at 140k. And all i did was a seal kit.

Some of the peripherals are also responsible for their premature death. The check valve that likes to clog up springing immediately to mind. That was a **** poor plan from the get-go. Ooops. (sorta like the plenum having a gasket you need to pull the intake to fix....)

The torque converters were weak.

Chrysler KNEW these trannies were inadequate to the task, and thus we have "Torque Management"....... a bandaid fix to save them a buck.

Gotta give the design engineers some slack here, I think. If they'd known that some bores could come up as short as they eventually did, they'd have spec'd things differently. I'm sure of it.

The stupid part of it all is that in this application you need only four threads to catch. If they'd erred on the side of (manufacturing variance) caution this would never have been a problem and those original bolts would have been only 3/8" long. So it goes... Never send a boy to do a man's job, right?

EDITED TO ADD: That said, they really should have evolved the 725-B for this application. Using the A version was a hyooge mistake.

Or better yet, IF you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself. I guess that's why all us DF members like working on our trucks.

Aww comon guys, are 46RE trans ain't that bad. I firmly believe if are they maintanenced and taken care they last a long time. My truck (which used to be plow truck in Boston) has 108K on the clock and still shifts flawlessy thru all the gears. Never been rebuilt, only fluid and filter changes. And I drive her hard! I sure she got a good 'nother 50K to go before I even think about overhaulin the trans...Just sayin...

I'm gonna go with bigstick on this one. I've got 244k and counting on my original tranny and it shifts hard and strong like the day I bought it with 2 miles on it. The service instructions in the back of the manual says about every 24k miles change your fluid. It's not that hard and I know you shouldn't have to for most trannies but for this tranny you do so do it. I've done it religiously for the life of the truck and it's still going and I can't be happier with it. One of my friends works at a tranny shop and he swears up and down that for every dodge he sees 2 chevy's role in right behind it..

Maybe because Chevy outsells Dodge by 2 to 1?
