got a 28-30 ft 5th wheel that weighs about 6,500-7,000 pounds and it pulls it pretty good

but the truck is a 99 1500 with the 5.9 and custom made helper springs that he got at spring service in johnson city

stock dodge transmissions are not known for reliability. if yours has never been rebuilt, the odds are pretty high that it won't stand the strain.

things you must do are - put in a big transmission cooler. tow with OD off. change fluid and filter regularly. keep your tires small to keep your gear ratio lower. consider regearing even lower to 4.10 or 4.56

things you should do if you need a rebuild - rebuild with heavy duty towing parts including torque converter. rebuild with all the tricks to improve lube and cooling.

Your 5.2L should have no problem towing a 5k LBS trailer. But i do have the 5.9L Mag, it really shouldnt make a dif. Our 5.2L and 5.9L Mags were built solid with a lot of torque.

It's not the engine that is the issue, it's the tranny. Depending on how often you pull that trailer a tranny cooler would be ideal.

personally Id go out and buy a new truck. Even a 2nd gen cummins or 3rd gen hemi. It might be better a better way to go. Itll save the hassle of having to upgrade all that and have the headache of spending 2 grand on a rebuilt tranny...

I dont know, thats what my dad did. We bought a 26-28ft trailer and got a new truck that could pull it with out having to worry.

My transmission was rebuilt shortly before I bought it and unfortunately being a full time student I can't afford a new truck but I will drive carefully and with the od off
