Default Just bought my first Dodge. Time to swap the V6 to a V8

Hello everyone,

I've just bought my first dodge ram. Its a 98 Single Cab Short Bed, v6 5spd.

My uncle has a 3/4 ton dodge van with 5.9 in it that hell sell me for $500. I was wondering how hard it'd be to swap it into my truck.

If this has been explained many times can someone point me in the right direction. Maybe a link to another thread.

Thanks again everyone.

What would I have to do about wiring?
Use the harness off the van? use my existing harness?
Why would I need a v8 transmission harness? What in the transmission is electronic?

Thanks Again,
Josh

i meant wire harness for under the hood u could probally adapt the harness from the fan but probally better off finding a 98 ram stick in the junk yard my harness does not have any of the wiring for the auto trans and stuff like that as well as ur ran van trans wont have the connectors for the stick shift trans like reverse switch and stuff like that so if u find a harness and computer out of a stick u should be good i cant really think of any other issues u might have u will have to take ur truck into the dealer and have the vin programed into the new computer

I was planning on using the harness and computer from the van. So the vin on the computer should match the engine, right?

The PCM would have to be swapped as well. This isn't like the old days, when the engine and transmission were just swapped. You have computers and wire harnesses to consider.

Not to mention, if the van is an automatic..... you are going to be missing some connectors, and have a few extra, with no place to go. You really need a harness out of a v-8 manual trans truck. along with the PCM.

I forgot that the radiator may be different as well as the front suspension.

The van IS an auto.
So im guessing the harness and computer from the van isn't going to work for me then.

It will run the engine, but poorly. It will be confused when it cant control the transmission, will set numerous codes, and be generally unhappy. The CEL will constantly be on.
