So when it grenade's itself, whats the best upgrade for us? A Daily driver, weekend warrior/hunter. really hard on the ole truck on the weekends getting to and from hunting spots. I read a quote from someone about ," i dont slow down for speedbumps , they slow down for me", lol similiar but i baja 1000 the truck up and down the rocky roads. no time for taking it slow.
Did you make sure that the gear teeth themselves were not broken up?
If no, then definitely the factory Trac-Lok system. The metal clutch bands break up quite easily. If you look into the pumpkin up on the drivers side near where the axle tube starts you'll see the clutch pack and it's more than likely broken. When you get the work done, you may want to consider doing gears at the same time if you want to go for a bigger ratio. It'll be expensive, but it'll save you some labor charge later should you decide to swap gears.
This was actually my first expensive "mod" back about 43,000 miles ago. Went with a Detriot Truetrac LSD and haven't looked back.

I don't know the history of the truck, but I'm just throwing this out there....
If the previous owner had the rear end rebuilt at some point, that could have been left over shrapnel. I know that when mine went boom, it left a lot of crap behind that you can neither reach or flush out. I've just been extra careful when I change the fluid in the pumpkin that I inspect everything to make sure that the pieces parts I'm finding are NOT new.
Yea, I'm trying to be Mr. Optimistic here, but you never know.

and heres looking at the same ecept thru the bottom, ive owned since 75,000 miles and changed the gear oil once with royal purple first metal anything ive seen in the rearend. i think a combo of tharashing on it and letting it go a tad to long....and also the outside of the ring gear not the gear itself was was starting to scrape or dig into the cover alittle bit? wtf is that all about? so i hit the carrier bolts with a impact just for giggles. friggen rearends
