Default gears popin and whinning

Hello all,

I have posted this before but I am looking to replace my rear gears in the 9.25 rear end. I have 99 1500 4x4. This is my daily driver and I use it for off road weekly. I have 33 12.50 15 on it and may only go up to 35's one day. I would like to install lockers but I have heard a lot of bad things about them. I'm looking for someone with more experience about this issue I need more durability off road. I got stuck the other day and if I had posi that wouldn't have happened or so I think....

the plan is to replace the rear that is failing and the front dana 44 (to posi) later if it is worth it.

4.56 seems to be the ratio of choice for 35 inch tires. Given the cost involved with a gear swap.... doing it ONCE is most certainly the hot ticket. Not an exercise you want to go through twice...... (unless you have huge piles of cash laying about, and nothing special to do with it.... in which case, send me some....... )

Lockers can make street driving interesting, and you will get a lot of different opinions on drivablility...... A selectable locker for the front would be best...... else, your front drivetrain will be turning regardless of if you are in 4WD or not.

How much highway do you drive now, and do you plan on driving before upgrading to 35's

Most people go with either a selectable locker for the front, or the auburn LSD, you can do a search for either. Dana 44 front

Alot of people stand by the factory LSD, which I have to admit after 170k on my truck it still gets the job done with a little help, but either the true trac or a locker from eaton should satisfy the back

I have heard people talk about driveability of lockers but its one of those things once you learn to drive its easier, your truck always follows momentum first and front tires second as long as you know were your front tires are pointed trouble should stay away

Thank 's for the reply! Just went outside and found that the right rear seal is leaking! Great think I will be starting on this sooner that I was hoping. I have been looking at the true trac and the locker for the rear. thinking of going with the locker.

I drive about 40 miles to work every other day and on trips to Alabama 5hrs.

Unless you want to upgrade the gears anyway. You do realize that replacing that rear axle seal and bearing is rather easy right?

Zman17,

The gears are making a lot of noise like they are binding up, I haven't pulled the cover yet to see what damage is there. then I find that the right seal is bad, I would like to have posi for trail riding and 4wheeling. the chepest way to go is to install a locker for around $850. my concern is that, is that the best way to go for the price? As it is my daily driver.

Get you some dana 60's with a some 4:56 gears. And I assure you that you will not have any problems. I have dana 60's on my 1985 ford f150. The fronts have the manual lockers. I don't have any problems with those. But others seem to have issues with them saying they break.

But here is a pic of my blazer, an ol blue
