Grab the PCM, harness, and sensors from the manual truck, and, of course, all the manual trans stuff..... put it on your truck. If they are both the same year, should work fine, though you will have to reflash the PCM for the correct engine size. If you have 4wal, you may also run into problems with a VIN mismatch between the PCM, and the abs controller. (not sure if that is an issue with RWAL)

If the years are too far different, (like, if the donor is 97 or older..) it will be MUCH more interesting, as some of the dash wiring is going to be different.

there are some pretty serious differences between the 96, and the 98.... you wont have everything you need to complete the swap out of those two trucks. The dash wiring is different, the instrument cluster is different, the speed sensors got mucked about with, (maybe). You would still need to get the wiring harness, and PCM from a 98 truck, with a manual trans to make the swap 'easy'...... as it stands, you would be spending more time trying to chase down wiring demons than it would be worth, at least, to me.

Might be easier just to fix whatever is wrong with the truck that already has the manual.... certainly cheaper.

And it isn't something I have actually done before, at least, not on a 2nd gen dodge..... so, I am not speaking from direct experience, just from what I know of these trucks, and the numerous changes dodge seemed to think were such a great idea, from year to year.

No matter which way you shake it, there are going to be bits and bobs that you will have to chase down.... and they might be fun to find. Just getting everything installed is only the first battle, then, you have to convince it all to WORK.......

Heyyou is probably right. It's probably not worth the hassle to change it all out.

If you're really interested, do some searching on the forums you'll find all kinds of stuff to read. It's not impossible, but probably not worth while.
