could that be the cause of the "gap" between the transfer case, and front driveshaft?

luckily i found a transfer case already on car-part for $200 and has 87K....

I agree with Sheriff420, sounds like the dust shield on the brakes. You did say you recently removed a stone from the brakes? Sounds to me like maybe you missed one....

Could be the DBL Cardan joint on the front shaft. My 98 made that noise and the joints were good. The ball and spring setup in the center was shot.

ewwwww. what a horrible sound.

i've never heard a u-joint make that scratchy of a sound.
i also notice that it doesn't screetch when you start moving, but its delayed until you either let off the gas, or touch the brakes, i can't tell which.

it sounds like a higher rpm screech to me, faster than what your tires are turning. can you put it up on jack stands and replicate it while stationary and safe. then put an assistant under the truck to track the location of the sound. with such a loud and horrible sound, it should be easy to follow.

Remove the front shaft and put it in 4w and see if it still makes the noise. That will either eliminate or verify the noise is coming from the transfer case. Plus it's the best way to check the dbl joint on the shaft.

DV , you get my PM?

^ zman are you referring to the pm about the two threads with endless run-on sentences which provide breathtaking detail about all twenty symptoms of the man's problem with examples of how it sounds and feels and continues with all the actions that he's taken and all the reactions from those actions and how its all packed into one nice long concise and disturbingly detailed sentence that my pea-brain cannot comprehend all at one time and in one sentence and i suppose he's allergic to periods and commas

yeah that's an LOL for sure.

Now it's making the noise without turning? Pull the diff cover off and have a look. And how are you checking the axle shaft ujoints?

im putting a pry bar between them, and they are tight...i just replaced them in June.

yes its doing it without turning now...whenever i get above 25 it will do it, consistantly, , its a grind sound, not a scrape....then when i slow down, it stops.
