Front end grind.....
flushed the front diff... still grinds, took off CAD and noticed no fluid in the housing, but diff is full...could this be my problem? that the whole front diff needs a good cleaning?
CAD housing is slightly above the normal fluid level, so it takes a little bit of driving for the oil to sling out into the cad.
dry cad could cause premature seal failure, but not grinding.

drove it to my buddies shop. i ripped up the 4x4 boot so i can see tranny, and try to pinpoint the noise, on my way over it grinded and sounded like it was from tranny. my buddy cant look at it until wednesday. on the way back home, (3/4 mile) it didnt grind... when i turned in driveway, it had a quick faint grind, but that was it...tranny shifts perfect, 4x4 works perfect...i have a feeling it could be the transfer case snap ring ive heard about....
filled cad with fluid.......any more input please share

It may very well be the snap ring. Pull the tail shaft and look before there is hole in the side of the case. What you want is this http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_cata...ase_saver.html
I have one, brand new for $45 shipped. As long as you are still in Mass. and didn't move to Alaska!

ouch, my rear diff was full of water, pulled the gromet and it came pouring out...pulled cover, going to clean and refill tomorrow, normal shavings on magnet.
also whats the size for the transfer case fill hole? i think that has water in it too. tranny fluid is perfect.
does tailshaft removal require any special tools?

It's just the housing you want to pull, and no special tools are required.
Given how you beat up on that truck, you really do want a transfer case saver in there. It's damned cheap insurance. The alternative is this:
The good folks at drivetrain.com are putting mine in tomorrow. Those photos right there oughta scare everyone with a NP231 and a four bolt tailshaft housing to put one of those little critters in, I think.

luckily i have no cracks in the t-case that i can see.....i can see that i have fluid leaking from between the transfer case, and transmission, do they take gaskets there, or do we just use rtv?
also i got a bunch of fluids today, going to continue with the flushings.....doing a tranny flush to my managers truck later today for some extra cash...going to buy some atf4 with it and flush transfer case.
but if i dont get transfer case done today, its ok, im bringing it to my buddies shop tonight...hes not going to look at it until tomorrow, but hopefully all goes well....luckily hes not charging me to diagnose the problem.....i hope its not major, although i would like to gut out my transfer case...sounds like a fun project (i love big projects that most people cant do)

ok well i went to my buddies shop this morning....took him for a ride. Like i said i have the 4x4 boot out so you can see top of tranny etc. Well he was in the pass. seat and he noticed the front driveshaft would start spinning at random...said it would be still, then start moving....He believes this is my problem, but he doesnt know if the transfer case or front diff is making it spin....so he took my truck, and i should know by 6pm tonight what it is....we shifted it into 4x4 and it engaged instantly, front shaft was spinning. Put it back in 2WD, and shaft wasnt spinning, then started spinning again about 300 more yards down the road....
hopefully this is an easy fix....
