Default 4 Wheel Drive Slipping in and out

Hi, It seems that why i put my truck in four wheel drive it feels likemy truck is slipping in and out. It will jerk when you give it some throttle. This doesnt happen everytime but pretty regularly. I'm wondering if this is the same problem a friend of mine tried to explain to me about some spring getting locked up. He advised taking it to a gravel or dirt areaand putting it if 4 wheel drive and doing some donuts to unbind the spring? Does this sound right?

Not really. Sounds more like a good way to break some parts......

You WILL experience bind in the drivetrain if you are on dry pavement, or, your truck can get reasonable traction at all four wheels. Neither situation is really good for your truck. Front and rear wheels travel different distances when turning, if you have good traction, then something needs to give. Generally, this will be felt as the truck "hopping" a bit. Mine does this even on gravel roads, on tight corners.

You may have a vacuum leak somewhere though, so the front axle disengages at the CAD......

Does it make rude noises when you think it is slipping?

no there isnt muchof a sound just a slipping/ jerking feeling. As for donuts, not litterally spinning the entire truck. but getting the wheels to break loose from traction. The guy who advised this was a old dodge guy who said the problem was with the 4 wheel drive in the dodges. When "it" went out the first time the steering wheel became nearly impossible to turn. Anyone know what that problem is?

go find a steep hill drive up it in 2wd and make sure you get "stuck" then put it in 4wd and drive up the hill. its a good way to test the 4wd especially when you are in the market to a new to you truck.

not on pavement

jack up the front end with the engine running and truck in park and shift into 4wd, regardless of whether or not the 4wd light comes on, go over to the passenger side wheel and spin it. if the drive shaft moves that verifies the enagagement of the shift collar. vice versa to verify disengagement- spin the wheel and the drive shaft shouldnt spin.

to actually see if the t-case is powering the front wheels you'll have to put all 4 corners on stands and put it in drive and engage 4wd. and see if the front wheels spin (of course)

best way to check the 4wd if you dont have a jack is to find a steep hill. obviously not a paved steep hill. dirt gravel or mud. get stuck in 2wd engage the 4wd , back up and try to drive up the hill again. if you cant get up and only the rear wheels are spinning your 4wd is broken, if you make it up the hill your 4wd is working.

I know that my 4wd is working i was just getting worried about the jerking feeling when im on the pavement. It doesnt jerk when in the sand only on the grass or pavement.
