It shifts pretty firm now, I did move the tv cable a bit in the past, but I either noticed no difference or it would shift too hard, so I have it back to stock (clip lined up with the pin on tb lever). I also replaced my tps with one off another 98, and that did help some. Seems to kick down a tad earlier and hold 3rd gear a bit longer, which I like.

So lemme ask the main question to you all. My tc will not come out of lockup without downshifting. I've really never driven automatics for any length of time other than my dodge. I recently drove a z71 and my dad's f150. I noticed both trucks would come out of lockup if you mashed down on the gas slowly, then the rpms will go up, but they wouldn't necessarily downshift to 3rd if you didn't continue mashing the gas. Mine will not do that. If you start mashing the gas slowly, it'll wait till about half throttle, come out of lockup, and immediately downshift to 3rd. Is that normal for our trucks? I have the entire tb with all sensors from a scrap truck. Thought the sensors might come in handy. I suppose I could switch map sensors and see what happens. Mainly, I'd like to know if they're supposed to come out of lockup without going to 3rd for a small rpm jump and a little low speed passing power.
It does not just come out of lock up. It goes right to 3rd and is normal. And you are suppose to turn OD off any way in those situations.

You seem like a pretty smart guy...but, I'm supposed to turn off od if I slow down but don't drop below 45 mph and then want to accelerate? I quesyion your statement, sir. Tis an automatic...should shift for me. Does it say that in the manual or something? Don't get all mad and exclamation pointy on me, cuz I like you. Lol.

LOL, I like you too, no worries there!!!!!!!!!! I'm talking about when you mash the throttle or just slow to 45 or so. You have to slow down a lot more for it to down shift and for the TC to unlock. Almost or actually stop. Both of mine do the same thing and so does my step dads Dakota.

I believe mine goes into lockup around 45 under light throttle and will downshift to 3rd at about 40. I read a post on here somewhere about a dealer pcm update that doesn't allow lockup until 52 mph (I think), but was unclear if it contained the deathflash too. No lockup til 52 sounds ideal. Any ideas on that? I'm guessing a tuner would adjust shift points similarly? My main dislike with the truck is when you're going down the highway, have to slow down to 45 or 50, then get back on the gas and the tranny puts you in that awkward "I've got no power" zone and you either have to let the fiesta pass you or mash the gas down, downshift once or twice, and look like you're trying to show your butt. Lol

I guess I shouldve started another thread... Doesn't have much to do with the check valve at this point.

That's exactly how they act, my 2500 is much better than my 1500 was, due to the 4:10's. You can ask a dealer if they can just do the lock up flash, but probably not.

Probably will just live with it. Closest dealer service department consists of ********, and I'm afraid they might death flash me.

Yeah, get your own thread! lol

I'm actually leaning towards my problem being something to do with my tcv, or tps. More diagnostic driving has pinned the problem down a little more. ANY time I mash down to where it waits till after 3k rpm to shift, it sticks to that once I go back to normal driving conditions (i.e. pu$$y footin), at which time it will only shift once it hits 3krpm and shift HARD as if I'm wot. So, throttle valve sticking? Anyone? Bueller?

edit - Stopping, putting it in park for a moment, and then back to drive has "fixed" the problem at times, but other times I also have to shut the engine down and start back up for her to come back to normal.

Check the TV cable, and see if it is binding.

If it is binding, find out why. Make sure it is indeed the cable itself, and not something internal to the trans that is sticking. If it is the cable, replace it. They aren't that expensive, and if it is binding now, it WILL do so again......
