hello guys and gals

got a neighbor 97 ram1500 front drive shaft i can turn by hand while truck is sitting on the ground i belive front pinion or ring are gone anyone with info on this ?? or a online manual ???

There is a manual available in the FAQ section.

If the truck is NOT in four wheel drive, you should be able to turn the front driveshaft, even with the truck in park, and the front wheels on the ground.

greetings. as said when in 2wd, drive shaft is disonnected at two points. in the t-case and also at the passenger side axle disconnect (CAD). so combined with the diff's spider gears, everything rotates freely.

if you crank the truck and shift to 4wd, and the vacuum operated CAD actually works and connects the axle halves, then you get a different result.

when the CAD doesn't work, begin troubleshooting here

ok i was wonder owner clams someone told him he need a new ujoint but he lost an iac and was unable to restart so i just took a look diagnosed the running prob and when i was lookin at everything i turned the shaft and wasnt familiar with the interworkings of the front drive turns really easy i will have to investigate a bit more he complained of popping and 4by4 not working good thankyou for the fast responses

popping is likely an axle u-joint. its very easy to check while its sitting still. just rotate axle side back and forth against the wheel side. it'll probably go clack clack.

vacuum cad malfunction happens to them all. it's usually a vacuum problem with rotted off or torn off vac lines.

caution, working on one of these trucks is a full time job. LOL
