Default Overhead console replacement/swap question...

2001 Ram 1500 2WD 5.2L Quad Cab

The overhead console I have is the one without the temp/compass display (like in the first picture)

Would I be able to install the console like in the second picture (including the temp/compass display)?? What type of wiring differences are there? Where are the thermometer/directional sensors usually located?

How involved or difficult would this be? Is it worth the hassle?

I have the overhead console that looks just like this one:

The one that would like to install is this one:

By looking at them, they are identical. If you got it from a parts truck, pull the whole harness and just follow the wires. Either that or just look in the FSM. It does have some wiring diagrams.

Hey jeffress, if you do manage to do the swap, I'll take your old one off your hands.

I have the consle computer and it hasn't worked since I got the truck (used). Plus, the "eyeglass" holder compartment on mine is broken and won't stay shut.

I think the 'upscale' center console also needs the "high value" Central Timer module. I don't know if the sensors it requires for proper operation are installed by default on trucks that don't have the upgraded console either.....

Best bet would indeed be to look in the FSM, and see just what all is involved there, and what you are going to need.

Some guy did a DIY in this thread. Apparently it is possible to upgrade.

Yeah...possible, but not easy.... I decided that I have a pretty good sense of direction and I can roll the window down to get the temperature.

Yes it is possible I did it, it was me that put up the DIY. Sorry about the pic my photo bucket account got hacked and will I lost a lot of pictures.

My friend it is not hard you need the wiring harness That goes with the upgraded overhead console. That is it.

Trace the wiring down the drivers side A peria down to the back of the fuse box, The connector will be brown.

The upgraded overhead console connector is white
The standard overhead console connector is brown.

Plug the new upgraded overhead console connector into were the brown one was. That is all there is to it. Dodge is so good they pre-wired the truck at the factory.

Let me know how it goes.

And the temp/directional sensors are already there too?

The directional sensors are yes, the temp no you need to get the sensor. But the wiring it factory run open the hood and look close to the hood light you should see a plug, That is for the temp sensor.

Sorry I do not have pictures but trust me it is vary easy once you start looking you will see what I am saying.

If you need I can tack some pictures of my set up.
