Default shifter position

Ok, my truck has been doing this since I bought and has always been a little annoying. Where it says "P R N D ect..." the little bar in there that tells you what gear your in doesnt match up properly. For instance if you put it in drive the bar is hidden in between N and D. There seems to be some slop in the shifter itself, if you wiggle the shifter the little bar will move back and forth slightly but never lines up perfectly. The biggest problem with this is since it doesnt match up is my reverse lights wont come on, which can be tricky backing up in the dark lol. So my question is how do I get this to match up correctly? Thanks for any input ahead of time!

Try adjusting the shift cable a bit. There's a clip that you pop off and can move the cable. Careful though, make sure you know what gear the trans is in before you pop it off.

Wasn't there DIY in the FAQ section for adjusting this?

well on my 99 its a little wire that runs from behind the guage cluster under the steering wheel and connects to the shifter. mine did the same thing when i bought it. just be careful you can adjust it a little, but too much and the wire will break completely. mine dosent move at all anymore.

as for your reverse lights, i would check all your fuse next to your dash, the gear selector has nothing to do with the lights.

I searched in the DIY and didnt find anything, there might be but I didnt find anything. Ok ill do some fiddling with that wire and see if I can figure it out. The thing with the reverse lights is, they will work if I get the shifter in the correct position but that position is when its pretty much in neutral. Thanks for all the input! Ill post on on how it goes.

Adjust your shift linkage first, make sure it is right, then adjust the little cable for the indicator..... Should be able to find the procedures in the FSM, available in the FAQ section here.

Well I looked around on the truck and the FSM and found something about the shifter, it wasnt much of a procedure but it did help. The shify indicator bar is lined up right now but the reverse lights still dont come on except in between R and N. Im wondering if this is because I adjusted the cable for the indicator and not the one for the linkage. The one I adjusted is mounted on the steering column and its like a big white plastic adjustment screw.

Sounds like that adjustment screw was ok.(it has nothing to do with the reverse lights) There is something wrong with the linkage itself. Adjust that as mentioned above. Make sure the linkage grommets are not worn/missing/damaged also.
