Default AC Compressor Hum / Noise

Hello,

I have a 2001 Dodge 5.9L gas with a very noisy vacuum leaking sound. At first I thought it sounded like a vacuum leak that is.... Then I got a section of tubing out and finally determined that the exact location of the noise was the AC compressor that is on the firewall on the passenger side (at least I assume it is the AC compressor LOL) .

It is loud enough that I can hear it in the cab. It does not change when I turn ac / heat off completely.

Any ideas?

Look at the A\C clutch pack. I don't if its a common problem but mine broke and it rubs the pulley. I have seen other RAM's like mine too. Another way to tell is to see when you take off the belt and check the pulley. I have seen some A\C compressor pulley bearings go out.

Compressor is on the front of the motor.

Yea, by the firewall is the accumulator drier. And what does " I got a section of tubing out" mean? The vacuum lines are all right there too, so maybe you do have a vacuum leak.

I took a section of plastic tubing, shoved one end in my ear and moved the other end around the engine until I could pinpoint the noise. Definately coming from that accumulator or whatever it is. Anyone else have one of these that is noisy? I'm not sure if that's a sign it's on it's way out or not.

There are no moving parts in there...... only thing that goes thru there is refrigerant.... if the passages are partially blocked, it might make some interesting noises... but, not too sure on that. If your A/C works the way it should, don't worry about it. (just turn the radio up louder.)

Thanks guys, actually it was a crack in the vacuum line directly behind the accumulator. Put 30 cents of new vacuum line in and it's as quiet as a mouse in church.
