the only 2 things i can think of off hand is either gonna be a problem with the throttle body or a vac line somewhere

That's the upstream oxygen sensor. Just replace it and get happy.

Most likely not the o2 if it is when he first starts up. It would be in open loop. The IAC motor is making the whistle noise, but my truck whistles for a little bit too on a cold start. That said, two of my friends IAC motors whistle all the time. As far as the die'n (you say wanting to shut down)... do the rpms drop, truck shakes, and then revs a little to compensate?

Mine did that to me also and come to find out it was the EGR valve. Check that and see if it is bad. It wont throw any warning lights or anything at least mine didnt. They are like $90 at autozone.

Pull the front O2 sensor out of the exhaust, and try again. If it runs better... replace or remove the cat.

Yep, the sensor that's essentially in the upstream side of the cat is the one you want. If it's not been replaced already, it's time to do it because they tend to fail right around 100,000 miles or so. And since it's about that time for a periodic maintenance replacement, I recommend doing it straight away. If (I'd say when) it fixes the problem then you can just be happy and not worry about the other potential culprits.

And a 97 should not have an EGR valve. And as already suggested, unscrew the o2 and leave it hang and see if it runs any better.
