Default transmission problems?

hi, to whomever migth help me; thanks in advance.. 1996 1500 4x4 5.9; I've been having what i think transmission problems, driving around 15-20 miles, the tach goes from 1000-2500 back and fort, like i was accelerating and releasing, on and on; i have replaced: plugs, wires, cap, rotor, idle control valve, and nothing, what should i be checking next? thank you

thanks to your responses, i just found out what the problem is. the truck came with a 5.2 engine, and some genius replaced with a 5.9, good intention however left the previous computer on truck, so its blocking the torque converter, sensors, injectors and some other things. so i today as i was driving i heard a rattle or a grinding noise, and now the 3rd gear wont engage... so i gotta figure out if i find a computer, or a 5.2 engine. and fix the transs... i dont know... thanks for your input. though.

i took my truck with a cooworker whom has a devise to read codes, and it was reading my computer as if my truck had a 5.2, blocking the torque converter, injectors, and sensors, causing my trasmission to engage at diff times,
