Question Grinding at full turn and brake.

I've noticed that when I turn the wheels to the stops and reverse while using the brake to back out of the drive I can hear a metal on metal grinding noise coming from the front, and it is LOUD! My thoughts are that I have a 95 but my wheels are from a 96. I am pretty sure they have the some backspacing and specs but that is the only thing that I can think of. Any Ideas out there or someone who has had this problem that could tell me how they fixed it... Thanks!

you'll get a power steering whining noise when you hit the stops.

otherwise, put it up on jack stands, crank it up and turn the wheels and spin the tires and see if you can duplicate the noise.

be a little careful about turning the wheels without the engine and ps running. i pushed mine back and forth the other day while not running and it spit ps fluid out the top of the reservoir. it had never done that before.

No it's definatly not power steering whine. It does that all the time. It almost sounds like the caliper rubbing on the wheel. It's a scary loud grinding noise but it will only do it if I turn the wheel all the way to the right and reverse and use the brake to slow coming out of the drive at slow speeds. Maybe a camber issue?

Are you sure your tires are not rubbing on the control arms or wheel liners? I know some 265/75/R16s will do it on a stock height truck.

My BFG's rub the control arms pretty bad at full lock, does seem worse in reverse but will also do it going forward. If there is a little flex it is even worse. I have 285/75's.

jeez...thats what my truck started doing, then it got worse and it was my transfer case chewing up its internals due to the snap ring failure....

I just got the chills 95RAM360.... I just put this tcase in about 20k ago. I did see a Ram come into the shop and made a sharp turn out of the door and I heard it. I stopped him and he said it's always done that and he has 285/75's. Wheel spacers? If it's the t-case could I remove the front shaft to stop it?

So the truck with 285's made the same sound as yours is? If so then it is just the wheels rubbing on the control arms. I have 285/75/R16s and a 2in spacer and I rub at full lock. It has worn a spot on the top control arm to bare metal.

If your snap ring is broke, removing the front shaft won't help, as the snap ring is on the rear output shaft. Need to pull the driveshaft, grab ahold of the output shaft, and see if it moves. If it does, need to pull the tailshaft housing, and look at where the snap ring used to be......

Transfer Case Saver time.
