Thinking Of Tackling The Plenum
QUEATION? I know it would cost alittle more, but wouldn't we all be better off if we just changed the whole intake.Hughes Engines This is the one I was looking at
yes thats the expensive way.....you gain a little under the hood with the intake and it will handle more bolt on's but the hughes plenum kit serves just as good if you dont plan on running boost.....do the kegger mod, and you'll be good.... kegger mod, with hughes plenum kit, intake kit and bolts would be around $175 to do vs. the $599 for the intake.
Kegger Mod.
The stock intake has a plate on the bottom of the intake plenum. (I am sure that is a latin word meaning "empty space"......) The plenum itself is just the chamber that the intake runners draw air from. From the factory, the plate that seals the bottom of that chamber is steel, and the bolts that hold it in place are a shade to long, so, a blown gasket for the plenum plate is extremely common, if not universal, to any engine that uses this particular manifold.
The Huges/Mopar Performance manifolds are a completely different design, and have no plate on the bottom of the plenum, so, while they are expensive, it is indeed a 'permanent' fix. Of course, using the hughes plate, gasket, and bolts, is supposed to be as well, and is a hell of a lot cheaper. Not to mention you get to keep all of your bottom end torque by NOT changing to a different style manifold. (there have been a few threads on THAT topic as well....)
Check out the article, its actually pretty good, and even has pics.

I have the hughes plate and I'm getting ready to tackle this soon as well. Should I have bought the bolts from hughes or are they identical to the existing bolts? If the existing bolts are to long, will they be after install the hughes plate becasue it's 1/4" thick?
im going to get new bolt from hughes, but i was wondering the same thing, if they are going to bottom out like the original bolts or not, but i think i remember hearing about people grinding off a little on the ends because they aren't threaded all the way down but not sure if they did this to old or new bolts?
Always use new intake manifold bolts. The bolts that hold the plenum to the intake, you could probably reuse. No need to cut them shorter if you're using the 1/4 inch plate. I got new bolts from hughes when I did mine, just felt safer not reusing the old ones, although I doubt its absolutely necessarry to use new ones. Do the bolts not come with the new plate? I bought the entire kit from hughes.
