Girdles are used with stock maincaps, and a 4 bolt main conversion will weaken a Magnum block.

adobe, whats your take on the previous posts of the day, since you last posted... regarding balancing, .060 quench, lathing .100 from the piston, CR etc?

Are you going for internal or external balance...?
If internal, you'll need the appropriate balancer/flexplate/Converter, and will have to worry about the change on the pistons, balanced means balanced.

If external...You'll probably be OK...I don't know about going half and half though, if the motor started out as internal....I think you're commited. Maybe someone else will chime in...

Like my transmissions, I leave the internal motor stuff to the pros. But I do know I'll probably be shaving the pistons down, I don't want to drop my CR with a thick headgasket, then the quench is way out there, and detonation becomes a problem... That's why built motors cost so much, the machinist has to assemble it a couple times, and make adjustments to get it right.

I'll be running a 580 to 600 lift cam so I'll get to deal with PV clearance issues...Which probably means a complete build, including degreeing the cam in...Only to tear it down if it doesn't work.

No wonder I never wanted to do this before...

well, i know the 360 is an externally balanced engine; but would you balance the rotating assembly on an externally balanced engine?

the damper that came with the motor has the elongated dimple halfway around it (externally balanced)

he said they originally planned quench at .040, but decided on .060 with input of some other pros.

shaving the piston .100 put the dome .010 above the deck, so no issues there, a .060 gasket would put quench at .050 and CR at 10:1

i guess ill have him weigh the pistons after he turns them down to see if weight needs to be taken off.

the rest of the rotating assembly will remain balanced, right?

where can i get an internally balanced TC for a 46re?

My 8" PTC 4000 stall converter has weights on it, I'm assuming for the external balance 360 that I have now...If that's the case I'll have to get another TC so I can simply drop my 360 back in if I kill my 408. I might up the stall a bit while I'm at it.

I run a 727 built by this guy. http://coperacingtrans.com/ I'll ask him.

Converters are neutral balance, you'll need a flex plate from a 518, they were internal balance, but maybe this has been covered.

i do beleive the flexplate i have is internal balanced, BUT how do I KNOW that my flexplate and dampener are internal balance?

thats good to hear that the TC is neutral! I have heard that they are not, but if the aformentioned is the case, IM glad!

my pistons and rings ARE SUPPOSED to arrive at the shop tomorow, SO im going to have him press the new pistons on, shave .100 from the crowns, fit ring set, re-balance rotating assembly... anything else?

96-up 360 external balance flexplate will have weights.318 internal/neutral will have no weights.in 96*up dodge moved the weights from the converter to the flexplate making all converters neutral.flexplate must be magnum seeing it has the windows for the crank sensor.
