Default Upgraded from my Dakota for a 2nd gen Ram

Hey guys, I bought a 2001 dodge ram, its all stock which is nice because now I can do all the upgrades myself! Theres a few questions about my Ram. When I test drove it there didnt seem to be any issues with it, it sounded nice, really quite (till i put a new exhaust system on it) there was not much motor wobble the tranny shifted nicely, everything seemed to be awesome on it. But the engine light was on asked buddy if he knew he said no. So I took it to work scanned it and it had a misfire in cylinder2 and 8. All on the same bank. So I decided Ill change my plugs, wires, cap and rotor. The carbon tit was completely melted off so thats why I just decided to change everything. Still had a miss. So my next step is going to be to clean out the injectors. But what my boss said is that intake manifold gaskets are notorious for failing on this year of ram. I dont know if thats entirly true. but it is leaking ontop of the motor and Im pretty sure it is the intake. Because I have so much oil consumption its insane, literally 1 L of oil in a day or a day and a half of driving, I do drive alot but that is still pretty outrageous. So I took out my plugs to check them again a week after changing them and there was a bit of oil on them not like before but there is still oil on them. I might put in hotter plugs I dont know what your guys' take on that is. The motor was not maintained at all, I think all it had done was oil changes, because everything was just dirty as hell and stock plugs, wires, ect. Theres 149000km on it. Which isnt very many. But Im pretty worried about the plugs having so much oil on them. And not only is my truck leaking oil, Its burning oil and I think that is where most my oil is going. I dont know if its the valve seals, or something more critical going on in the motor. I mean whats done is done and unless I get a rebuild or fix everything inside the motor I think it will keep burning oil. Just wondering if you guys know anything about these 5.9L having syptoms liek this???

Also I thought the tranny seemed good, but my boss drove it and he said its shifting into the next gear at way to high rpm, from 1st to 2nd its about 2500 rmp or so, and its about the same way for every gear. I know that every govener and tps is different, but I thought the way the tranny shifted was fine, but hey my boss is a licensed mechanic and he is a dodge guy, so I dont know what to think about it. Also when Im driving about 50kms and hour, it seems that the tranny almost downshifts but it feels more liek a loss of power but the rpm gauge doesnt really move, I dont know exactly how to explain it anymore than that but its only at 50kms when it does this, more so how to explain is if your driving a standard going really slow liek 10 or 20 kms and you dont have your foot on the clutch, the way it feels liek it loses power until you put your foot back on the clutch, if you guys cant answer that question I understand I just dont know if its normal or not considering its always at the same speed. My boss said it might just be the transmission kick down cable, or somesort of adjusting to do to the band, whatever that means, or the clutch pack, I didnt really understand what he was saying but any insight or experiences you guys might have, please let me know I want to fix up my truck, but I dont know how far I should go with this motor considering the oil burning cause an intake is easy to do, so please let me know what you think!

Thank you

You have a blown plenum gasket. That will lead to heavy oil consumption, fouled plugs, failed catalytic converters, and O2 sensors. Given the amount of oil you are going thru..... you should be able to just look down your throttle body and SEE the oil in the intake. Do a search on "plenum" here, and you will find a wealth of information on it.

Get the engine running right before you get too concerned about the trans. Make sure the level is up to snuff though.... (check in neutral, get a false reading checking in park.)

Something else to look at, is the PCV valve. Do NOT use one of the aftermarket guys. They do not control flow rates as precisely as the mopar units you get at the dealer, and will also lead to excessive oil consumption.

Yep. You have a blown plenum. Very common problem on 2nd dodge rams. You can go to hughesengines.com and buy the plenum repair kit.

Awesome thank you! So you dont think it would be the intake manifold gasket, just the plenum? I just dont want to get in there and redo the plenum when it could be the intake manifold gasket. I knew it did have something to do with the intake, but wasnt 100% sure, thanks alot for your replies, so if i replace the plenum gasket, it should eliminate my oil consumption? And also what pcv valve should I get, one from the dealers? I have the stock one on there right now, Im pretty sure.

In order to do the plenum gasket, you have to pull the intake anyway. Two birds with one stone..... Grab the plenum plate, and install kit from hughes, runs about 140 bucks, comes with everything you need, including intake manifold bolts. (No, you can NOT re-use them.)

this is what you want....but like stated above, you NEED new intake bolts, dont be surprised if some snap on you when removing them.
