Default Towing without TOW Package

I have a 24 ft camper, dry wt 4900. It's within the towing capacity of my 1500, but I'm wondering about problems I may encounter without the transmission cooler that comes with the tow package. Of the aux. coolers I recall seeing in the past, it seems they only had a few coils and were no longer than 8 - 12 inches. The transmission lines already run to a cooler in fount of the radiator that looks plenty big. Is the primary cooler included in the towing package different than stock, or is there an auxiliary cooler that is significantly larger than I think it may be?

If your aux cooler is mounted in front of the A/C condenser, it is aftermarket. What are the dimension of your aux cooler?

You should install a class 3 or 4 hitch to handle the weight better as the bumper is not the safest location to tow from as you are right on the limit (5K max?).

The primary cooler is the one in the radiator and it does a better job than air to oil coolers. Auxillary coolers supposed to be in addition to the in radiator cooler. The air to oil cooler can drop the temp below the temp of the water in the radiator so they are a great addition to a hard working truck.

Like heyyou stated we need to know the dimensions of your cooler (length x width x depth). Is the cooler hard lined in or does it have rubber lines?

One of the main things you need to remember when towing that much weight is to turn the overdrive off.

Make sure to install trailer brake controller and make sure that your camper has brakes.

4900 dry is going to stack up real fast to much more. be very carefull. previous posts on brakes is a must.
tranny cooler is another good concern, maybe set up a gage for your tranny temp could be in order. dont know the conditions you will be towing in but thats a tall order, esp if your wife packs like mine. lol. I like a bed full of wood and a wheeler on top so its a joint effort.

I really find it hard to believe that it weighs that little. My dad's is like 6900 dry.

To tow that camper, you're gonna need a trans cooler, brake controller, weight distributing Class III or IV truck hitch, 7-pin trailer harness, a weight distrubuting trailer hitch, and a trans guage is a very good idea.
