Default Towing my Dodge behind an RV??

Hi guys I tried the search but could not come up with anything so here we are.

I plan to get the hell out of California, to cruise around in a very nice class A motor home. My mother in law got it three years ago with the thoughts of doing the same but lost interest. So it is the perfect price for me and my wife but I need to keep the old green beast.

So my question is how do I tow my truck behind the motor home?
What do I need to do to the truck to get it ready to tow?

There is a falcon tow bar on the RV now rated at 6,000. But I do not think it will hold up to my truck. If it won't, got any recommendations for tow bars that will stand up better?

you should try to find a place that can weight your truck. i don't think it should weight over 6,000lb's. when my friend and i take a load of scrap into the scrap yard the truck only weighs about 5400-5600lb's and that with almost a full load. when we leave the yard the truck only weighs about 4800lb's and that is with us in it.

Thanks for the reply, That is what I was thinking as for weight but had to ask.

So I have been checking around the net and the relaters of the tow bar It should work. I just need to get the hook up put on my truck.

What would you think in the way of towing, along with wiring lights?

Not sure on towing hardware, but one thing I do know: do NOT tow with your truck in Neutral! You WILL destroy your transmission (unless your tranny is a stick).

If you have a 2WD auto: remove the rear drive shaft.

And if yours is a 4WD (someone correct me here if I'm wrong) you can probably get away with putting your T-case in neutral and leaving your trans in Park.

Front and rear drivelines are tied together even with the t-case in neutral. So long as the CAD doesn't lock, should be able to tow it like that. If the cad locks, you will break things. Best bet, 2 or 4 wheel drive, disconnect rear driveshaft when towing.

I know you need to remove the drive line on big rigs (Peterbuilt KW). Vary good to know I need to do the same with my truck.

As for the lights (brake, turn) would you recommend just running the trailer wiring back to the tale lights and tap in to the wires?

About putting the transmission in neutral wouldn't you need to leave the key in the on passion? Not going to do this just asking.

If the trans is turning when you are towing, you are doing it wrong. There is no rear pump on our transmissions, so, if you are turning stuff in there, there won't be any lubrication, and you will end up with a busted trans. If you pull the rear driveshaft, you won't have that problem. If you flat tow it, you are going to need the steering unlocked in any event, if you put it on a dolly, I don't think you have to.

If it was mine to do I'd find out if Remco makes a drive line disconnect kit for our trucks. I'm not entirely sure but I think they might... I'd give the good folks at drivetrain.com a call to find out. I wouldn't let 'em install it, but I'd buy it from them.

does your truck have a plug for trailer lights? if so you could just get 2 of the same trailer light plugs and run it from the RV to the rear plug on your truck.
