Default How strong is the glass in our trucks?

Well from my experience last night, not very strong!

The rear quarter glass on the drivers side pretty much exploded last night after nothing but a a cup hit it. it was about 2am, a cold front had just blown in and we were headed to What-a-burger! its a Texas thing. anyway i had a bunch of stuff in the back seat so i was tossing it toward one side to fit a couple people back there, and this hard plastic cup flew up and apparently hit the window causing it to shatter. its crazy i didnt even do anything. ill try to get some pictures up soon.

it wasnt that cold. the temp had dropped about 40 or 50 degrees in the night high yesterday was around 80 and it dipped to freezing last night. would that make a window that weak?

i did find a replacement window factory matched tint at a junkyard should be here tuesday for about 120$ i guess thats a fair price i dunno. hopefully it doesnt snow like they say it might.

anybody replace those windows before? i dont think it will to bad.

just be careful what you accidentally throw at your window.

(if this should be in the general discussion my bad)

Glass does funny things when temperatures get weird. I didn't even have to TOUCH the window in my challenger.... It was hot out, I needed something from the car, opened the door, grabbed what I needed, closed the door, two steps and BOOM. Little bitty pieces of glass EVERYWHERE..... (no, no one was shooting at me....) Surprised the heck right out of me.

I don't have it any more. I wish I still did. I miss that car. In a big way.

Well, they are tempered too. You can drive over a piece of tempered and it wont break, but smack it with a hammer and it will shatter like Mel Gibson's career.

with the window tinted it should not have just shattered! ...maybe spider-webbed... but not shattered. the po could have replaced it with a lower quality replacement at sometime or another

If it was just the factory tint, it would not have mattered. There is no film like aftermarket.

yea, i remember when it was really warm out this past summer, my pass window exploded from the windows being up all day and all the heat, and when i shut door it must of broke (notcied next morning)...

and it only cost me $25 bucks for the glass at a junkyard......you're getting ripped off.....

EDIT: just saw you said it has tint....maybe thats the reason for high price.....

I had a mirror crack because I hit a bump when it was freezing out.
My dads old buick had a crack shoot across the windshield while it was warming up on a cold morning.
Glass does funny things when it's cold.

yeah i was thinking it shouldnt have shattered but then i noticed that factory privacy tint is not a film, its dark glass. which is better i suppose.

there was a piece i could have gotten that was in town for about 70$ but it wasnt tinted, and it would look really goofy on my truck i think. and i probably wouldnt ever be able to get it to match with an aftermarket tint.

Sheriff- my dads truck did the same thing he was heating it up when it was like 10 degrees outside and it cracked right across the whole windshield.
