Default Couple water pump questions...

Well, it's imminent. My water pump is most likely going to puke soon. There is a squeal under the hood that has been there for the last few weeks, and getting louder, and I pulled the belt off and could wiggle the fan back and forth. Therefore, I have a few questions for you fine fellows and gals.

1. Is there one brand of water pump that is more highly recommended over the others? For instance, the Duralast from Autozone vs. the NAPA brand. I want to make sure that when I buy one, it is going to last a long time.

2. I have read on here about some things that should be done at the same time, like the double roller timing chain and front main seal. What else is recommended while I have the front of the motor accessible?

I appreciate any advice that you can give me.

I got the lifetime warranty feller... don't remember the brand, it was new, so, no core charge. (and, as it turns out, mine wasn't that old... so, I kept it. )

Might wanna look at your tensioner as well. Mine was pretty much seized when I took it apart.

Actually, I just replaced my tensioner last night. It seems to be just slightly quieter in the cab with the new one, so I think it was a good thing I swapped it out.

Unfortunately, I can still hear the water pump squealing in the cab.

That will work until the truck won't go any more.

Well, guess the only choice then is to change the water pump. Weekend project?

Sometime soon. Probably when I have time off during the holidays. Only thing that sucks is I don't have a garage, and I live in northern Michigan.

since its all aluminum, get a new one, not a rebuild. i don't think brand is overly important. a new one will run you about $65 or so.

if you plan to keep the truck, then while there - do everything. especially timing cover (water goes through it), timing chain, front seal, water pump bypass hose, check your radiator and heater hoses too. also - fix your plenum and do a tune up, and replace valve cover gaskets if leaking along with rubber grommets and pcv.

if your rear main is dripping, then while timing cover if off, remove oil pan and replace rear main (its a 2 piece) and oil pump.
