Default No Heat - Pull The Dash?

I have an '01 1500, 5.9, with no heat. Just want to be sure I rule out the small stuff before pulling the dash.

The AC and vents work fine. I can can change the vents to floor, main, and defrost fine at all blower speeds. The top radiator hoses going through the firewall both get hot. Can't smell any antifreeze or see any leaks.

Where do I go from here?

Thanks,
Mike

should try flushing the heater core before you go ripping and tearing. pull the heater hoses and use a hose

Make sure the blend door motor is operating correctly.

when doing a flush, be very gentle with the heater core pipes. they are soft copper and won't take a lot of rough treatment. i prefer to either remove the hoses at the manifold/water pump end, or just cut them out in the middle and splice them back together with a connector. flush the core in both directions until you get clear water. usually a bunch of crap washes out.

Good idea, and tips, on flushing. I will try it.

The blend door axle, connected to the motor, doesn't move when I switch from hot to cold. I'm guessing it should, right? Bad motor?

there is a coupler between the motor, and the little axle. Do a google search on heater treater. What you need should come right up.

Thanks. I saw the Heater Treater stuff earlier, but missed this part:

Anyway, I can manually twist the axle with the motor removed to get hot air. So at least I have heat until I can get the parts!

Thanks to everyone for the help. I'll post some pics of the fix.

Default no heat....ac

ha. ha.....had same problem. "99 ram 5.9 1500 4x4, previous owner had blend door problem and knocked a hole in case to move blend door. i found a bad motor, like yours, but i can't get enough clearence to get any tools to the motor. i even cut away the sound deadener pad. i was quoted 1000 dollar plus to repair it.

problem is design. the entire ac/ heater setup is in one case under dash. the dash parts have to be removed to get it out. if heater core is bad.....replace the ac core too, unless you have an extra 1000 dollars.

i thought breaking the case was stupid, at first, but realized that simply pushing the blend door with my finger saves a thousand dollars.................well, i'll just do it that way until i'm forced to go into it.
only problem is having to adjust it on in between days,,,,,but, hey...i'm cheap (and old too)

easy solution - set it for heat, then roll the windows down on the in-between days.
