80mm Universal TB?
Lol, carbs. There were some guys that swear they're easier to tune than FI vehicles, I think that's just because they could do it without a computer, read a Smokey Yunick book, and get after it.
I always considered the carb a somewhat controlled fuel leak.

Yep far superior to what it replaced and and most of the other oems solutions (read carbs) at the time. That early versions all mechanical air metering was genius with no computers to blow up or reprogram. And highly adaptable too. I remember dialing in for a performance cam and big valve heads by simply adjusting the height of the air metering plunger with an allen wrench. Took like 2 seconds and was like adjusting fuel mixture on a carb but way way more adjustment range than any carb richness screw circuit ever thought about being.
Watching evolution of the rabits/scirroccos in the late 70's is a bit of a sad tale indicating the state of disrepaired import and manufacturing laws here in the USA. My 77 scirrocco, first year of the KJ on that model since 76's were carbed, had no cat converter and still easily met the new emissions laws when all stock. I also had a 78 which had the exact same engine but also had a cat. As I understand it the cat addition was not required by VW to meet emissions standards in 78 as that hadn't changed compared to '77 but to meet a new law that said all new import cars must have cats no matter if the meet emissions standards or not. LOL Wonder why that law popped up ha. nothing to do with powerful us auto oems lobbying in washington trying to level the playing field and avoid developing their own fuel injection systems. lol nah couldn't be that.
