Default p1281 Engine too cold too long

Ran into this this afternoon.. I was almost happy to see a CEL since it's been so long since I've seen one.. It gives me something 'real' to do instead of just tinker..

I run a 180 stat, and have for a while.. the only difference between now, and, say, last week is the Ram Air Hood and accompanying CAI.. I did relocate the AIT sensor to the intake duct, but that has nothing to do with this code, right?

Why would it all the sudden just pop up like that? It isn't even cold today- it's in the forties.. This doesn't prelude something else, does it?

And, is it true that when this condition occurs, the PCM starts running off of tables instead of real-time variables?

thanks in advance..

There is a list of conditions that need to be met before the computer will set that code. Number of key cycles, engine below x temp for y amount of time, etc. You can probably just reset the code, and it won't show up again for a while.

Or, I could tell you that it is because the nitride coating on the crank journals has worn away, and now you have to rebuild your entire engine.

You pick.

I had that same CEL on my 96, and it would not reset.
Turned out to be a loose wire at the sensor

HeyYou,

I'm going to select DOOR NUMBER 1!!!!!

but, just for the sake of curiosity, care to 'splain the other option?

I'll go fishing for connections dsulli.. I've been poking around in there and there is a good chance I knocked something loose..

JUuuuuussssst out of curiosity, and because my brain is stuck in between gears right now.... question:

does a lean engine run hotter or colder than a rich one?

Lean runs hotter.

Nitride coatings are a friction reducer. Rebuilding your engine gives you the opportunity to go for the STROKER!!!! More cubes!!

Aye.. Me suspects I'm running rich... I won't know for sure until the wideband a/f goes on, but the new injectors are 'hotter' than the ones I pulled off.. I betchya that be the issue.. Hemifever cut me back 5% of what he thinks is an 11% difference, but that may not have been good enough.. It was just a guess anyway, because my wideband isn't installed yet. I'll be fixing that, and I bet the two are closely related.

i don't know, i'm just making this up but there might be some logic between the engine temperature and ambient air temp. and your new CEL might have something to do with the IAT relocation. the reason i'm thinking about this is that people who drive in the north pole climates never get the engine temp up to normal, yet they don't get the CEL.

then again, you might just have a bad t-stat. lol
