Default worried

So two things have me a bit worried to, one it over heated today but i shut it off before it got fully in the red...(actually got it to the red twice....) but the light never came on and again it never fully hit red just right on the edge... Next worry is my truck has tons of white smoke when its cold(smoke enough to fill the garage) my cat s pretty gutted and i got a glass pack, so im guessing that has something to do with it? Its done it since the gutting and doesn't really smell sweet(dont thnk so atleast..) and im not burning coolant(as of now). So any chance i furbed my engine getting it that hot today?and any chance the white smoke is a bad thing? No CEL right now and i know all my lights work. But im more stressed about over heating it today...

engines produce moister as a by product of combustion so without the cat some steam will be seen until the exhaust warms up.if it blows white clouds of steam when it is hot then the head gaskets are toast.overheating is bad you need to check your t stat your water pump and radiator . somthing aint flowin somewhere

white smoke when cold is normal.
watch your oil for coolant (milk chocolate) and for continued overheating and coolant blowing out under pressure. these are signs of head gasket failure. you can also check compression.

why did your truck overheat in the first place? you need to find and fix that problem? don't you also have a thread going about your heater? is that related?

Like dhvaughan said, I would check the oil and make sure coolant isn't getting in there. White smoke on a cold start is normal, but not that much.

but from a water flow standpoint - water pumps don't really wear out.
they might leak, and/or spit out bearings, and/or wobble or squeak,
but the aluminum impeller doesn't usually wear out, or erode, or fall off.

Granted, it IS exceedingly rare.... but, I have seen the steel impellers corroded to the point that they don't move much water anymore.

does the white smoke smell sweet? Like maple syrup? if so, then you have a head gasket leak. And that head gasket leak could also be a by product from a water pump failing.

Change the head gaskets (if exhaust smells sweet) and see if it still runs hot.

The bad thing about head gasket leaks is that the explosion from the combustion system will blast air into the water jacket and put air in your coolant system. Air makes cooling ery very hard.
