Default Vibration in Torque Converter I think?

Hey Guys. I just bought a 2000 1500 ram 4x4 sport. 165000kms. Truck looks good. The guy i bought is from said that the trans was rebuilt a year ago but it is doing some funny things. This is the first ram i have owned and i am looking for some advice. First thing is it was kicking out of od because it was too hot. i am going to pull out the check valve in the cooler line and blow out the cooler today. Second it hangs on to second gear too long when the truck is warmed up. Third i am not sure if it is engaging the lock up converter at high way speed, i am leaning towards no. but if it does sometimes i get a vibration when the t-convert kicks out, if you tap the throttle it goes away. I am not sure what rpm the truck should be at on the high way at 100km/h right now it is a 2200rpm with 265/75 - 16 tires. and last i can slip the t-converter to 2500 rpms by standing on the breaks is that normal. I am looking for some advice i want to get this truck fixed up. Thanks.

100kmh is about 60 MPH.. or thereabouts. If you have the 3.55 gears, you are running too high in O/D. Same size tires here, and at 60, fourth gear, TCC locked, I am at about 1500 RPM.....

Is yours an Off-Road edition by any chance?

Removing the check valve is a good start. Replacing the Governor sensor and solenoid and adjusting the bands would be the next option.

As far as the check valve, is the only benefit of removing it for blockage and flow issues?

I am not sure if it is an off road edition. All the badges have been removed. It has the 5.9L. I am sure now that the TCC is not locking up if you say it should be down around 1500 rpm at 60mph. I need to find someone with a scan tool and in the service manual it discribes a TCC test. During the test it will engage the TCC sol and if the engine is loaded down and stalls the TCC is good. if not well i will have to go further in. The vibration seems to come when i go down hill at 60mph the rpm will drop down around 1600. then when you hit the bottom the converter must disengage and i get the vibration. It goes away though if you tap the throttle but it will stay around 2200Rpm at 60mph. Thanks for the info.

Get a build sheet for your truck. If you have the offroad addition, they came stock with 4.10 gears... so, your tach WILL read higher than mine. Not sure by how much. (too lazy to hit the calculator. ) You can get a build sheet from any dodge dealer, or, there is a thread in the FAQ section with a link for email request.

Vibration might be a low speed miss too...... Mine would feel absolutely horrible when TCC engaged when I was having some ignition problems.

I was thinking that had to do with the excess heat of the fluid and maybe that was why it was shifting out of O/D

If the check valve is stuck shut, then, the trans WILL overheat in relatively short order, not as quickly in winter..... If the trans temp gauge comes on, the check valve is the second thing to check. Fluid level is first.
