Do i have to take the pulley off the pump before i can remove the pump from the truck?

 

Looks like you pull the pump with brackets attached first, then you must remove the pulley to get it off the bracket. Need a puller for the pump pulley.

 

Hmm. i think im gonna have to find a shorter belt then for the time beeing. I can bypass the pump with a shotrer belt right?

 

I replaced my power steering pump this past summer and I had to remove the whole pump before anything. I disconnected the two lines and took out the couple bolts holding it in then pulled the whole thing out, then removed the pulley and bracket.

 

Not recommended. The steering shaft from column to steering box isn't really designed to work on a non-powered power steering box. Not saying it is going to fail..... but, it certainly isn't going to do it any good. You should be able to rent the puller from the parts store, or, you could probably take the pump/bracket in to any shop, and have the pull it off for you for a few bucks. Or free.....

 

Now im having a problem trying to get the stud out of the bracket. It turns just a little but then it just will not move any more.

 

From the 01 manual:

(1) Remove the serpentine drive belt, (Refer to 7 -
COOLING/ACCESSORY DRIVE/DRIVE BELTS -
REMOVAL) OR (Refer to 7 - COOLING/ACCESSORY
DRIVE/DRIVE BELTS - REMOVAL).
(2) Remove the hoses from the power steering
pump and cap the fittings.
(3) Remove battery ground cable and unthread
stud from cylinder head, do not remove from bracket.
(4) Loosen upper bracket bolt and remove the
lower bracket to engine block bolts.
(5) Pivot the pump assembly past the coolant tube.
(6) Remove the upper stud and remove upper bolt
from cylinder head.
(7) Remove steering pump and mounting bracket
from engine as an assembly.
(8) Remove the pump pulley with Puller C-4333, to
access pump attaching bolts, (Refer to 19 - STEERING/
PUMP/PULLEY - REMOVAL).
(9) Remove the front pump bracket (Fig. 3). On
8.0L engine remove rear pump bracket (Fig. 4).

Not exactly sure which stud you are referring to...... (I haven't done this particular trick)

Work it back and forth, and sprinkly liberally with magic chemicals.

 

Im having trouble with #3. i got everything else off very easy. The stud will turn back and forth fine and then it just stops dead. Im letting it soak all of tonight i got to drive it to skool in the morning and hopefully when i get home i can get it out!

 

ouch, may have drill and re-tap that bad boy, if it snaps.

you'll need a puller to remove the pulley from the pump and then have the pulley pressed back onto the new pump shaft

 

Does that stud go into the water jackets of the block? Might just have some crap on the end of it. Once you get it past its 'sticking' point, maybe it will feel a little better about coming out.
