Default sensors or true trans issue?

new to forum but we have searched and had good help from members in past. aim4squirrels....big help plus love the photos

i apologize if the issue has been answered before, i'm good at searching but sometimes get overwhelmed with the info that is thrown back and only know just enough. i find the info and my boys fix the truck.

we have 2wd 98 ram club cab w/ 360 auto. purchased new, reg. maintenance done, only change k&n air filter 125k miles

not throwing any codes, transmission fluid is full, looks clean and smells ok

when driving it revs to about 3000 - 3500 or so before shifting into 2nd, does sometimes 2nd - 3rd and intermittent 3 - 4.

wondering if there is a sensor or two that is off but not enough to throw a code.

we replaced the cam positioning sensor, plugs, wires & dist cap about 6 mos ago. 1 month ago the thermostat [pain to get to and change!] have not replaced TPS but we are thinking that could be an issue. We have sprayed the tb with cleaner and that helped and corrected the idle issue.

we will be dropping the pan and splitting the trans filter to check for any issues, if looks ok, i read there are some sensors we should change correct?

could o2 sensors or air leaks cause this issue? basically, i'm looking for anything but a transmission replacement!

we look forward to to input and help. Thanks

Sounds like a governor pressure sensor, and solenoid issue. While you have the pan off, you could try removing, and cleaning them out. Or, just replace 'em. They won't necessarily set a code.

http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm

bout 2/3 of the way down this page there is a pressure solenoid conversion kit, if you are going to change it out its probably worth putting the kit in.

I don't mean to seem dense....which kit #? I see alot. Is it the one for high performance?

#REC. This kit was specifically designed to handle higher base pressure in high performance applications and to improve the reliability of the governor solenoid in normal use. In performance units the pressure can flood the Dodge solenoid and cause a no shift condition at full throttle. This is the fix. Fits all rear wheel drive RE model transmissions. Cost $149.00

any other specific part numbers would be helpful. What is a good recommended repair manual and schematic sheet so we can find everything. I know haynes and chilton. did not know if one was better than the other or if there was another out there. Thanks

Yes that is the kit you are looking for, there is a manual in the FAQ section you can download, i believe it's for a 2000 Ram but most of it is all the same.

Will the kit have everything or are there other parts too?

I drove it yesterday to see what son was experiencing, but i drove as if I was a new driver or on icy roads as to not over rev....1st gear goes to about 3000 -3500 rmp w/o shift, if I back off pedal around 2500 - 2800 [accelerating slowly] i can get it to shift into 2nd there by doing that about 90% of the time and then it's fine. only about 5% does it do the same going into 2nd. other gears are good.

we just have limited time to take apart so want to have as many parts ready to go as possible. any recommends for type of tranny fluid or filters or are standards ok.

contact them to make sure all the parts you need are included in the kit or they sell you any additional parts. Tranny fluid make sure its ATF 4+ and you should be good.
