Sweet rig bwdak!

I've said it ad nasium here.. i can't speak for everyone's Y, but mine was more of a punch line than anything.

I went with shorty headers and noticed nothing. I added magna-flow true-x, two magna flow high flow cats, and got rid of the Y- still using the factory crossover though, and still using the factory pre-cats.. (cali rig)..

I welder I'm not- but I can cut the hades out of anything in short order.. So while the truck was in the air and my welder bud was working on running the tubes for me, I got bored and chopped into the Y pipe..

Like I've said before- it was as if there were two 2.5" pipes heat shrunk together by a piece about 12" long and maybe 2.75" in diameter- and squeezed together.. there is no way that contraption wasn't choking the engine.. there is no way, for instance, you could run water in each of the pipes previous to the Y at a constant rate, and NOT have it fill and run over.. It is a choking point beyond anything else in that system that I could see.. You would be hardly any worse with a 90* T junction..

After removing the Y, the truck picked up a solid 1.5mpg, and it reacts as soon as i drop the brakes and move the go foot to the skinny pedal around 650-700rpm, where as before it would kinda bog down a little and then jump around 850-900rpm..

I ended up with a wye pipe like that and in combo with the 3" I/O magnaflow cat was the best mod I've done yet. Dunno if you could make one of the mandrel bent shorty downtube kits for another brand shorties work or not. All the shorties dump at the same location as to mate up with stock downtubes don't they? Mayybe you could order up the downtubes only from another company like Edelbrock and make those mate up to the Gibsons? I was able to piece together a kit and order only the Edelbrock downtubes through summit when I found used Edlebrock shorties which were missing the rest of the pieces. I had to call Edelbrock and get the part numbers for my kit together though so it was a bit of a pain but doable. Just throwin out dumb ideas...

Thanks! I also have the Gibson shortie headers which was the first mod I did. A free flowing exhaust system was the first thing I did to my truck. I knew I was going to be adding a few other power mods at a later date and in order to get the max performance out of them I'd need an exhaust system to make them work. If you put more air into the engine, you need a exhaust system to get it out. That's where you'll increase the power level and be able to take advantage of all the money you've just spent.

i just looked at the jegs y pipe and it looks like it would work out pretty good. i may try that in the near future. have to save up for it and a decent set of headers. would rather install both at the same time. question tho.......will i have to use non foulers for the o2 sensors with this y?

also, in regards to the TB......i am planning on building either a 408 or a 426 stroker in the next year or two. if i install a 50mm TB now, will i need a larger one later with the bigger engine? hate to waste money that i dont have
