Whats the biggest tire i can get on stock rims
Hey guys im lifting my 99 sport its a 2wd (gasp!) im doing the 6.5 inch fabtech lift and was wodering what size tire i could get on my stock rims. They are 16 inch could i run 315/75/16?
I keep hearing that you never want to have a tire greater than 3" wider than the rim.. Makes sense to me..
I mountain bike, and the two families of tire considerations are related- the closer the two are in widths, the 'squarer' the profile.. If the rim is significantly narrower, the tire will 'balloon', and be really susceptible to rolling off the rim.. that is a very bad thing.. the squarer, the more bite the edge has into the terra in turns, and the more flat the tread sits on asphalt- for longer tread life..
a 'ballooning' tire will also put a LOT of stress on the bead, and they will roll horizontally in turns making the truck seem to wallow.. If you ever take it off road and lower the pressure, you're amplifying these effects..

315 is the width.. the second designation is height in percentage of width.. double that and add diameter for the tires overall height (advertised height, don't even get me going about discrepancies in real height vs. advertised)
315/70/17 would be just shy of 12 1/4" wide, and with a sidewall around 8.5", which would be 34" tire roughly..
315/60/17 would be 31 1/2" tall..
315/75/17 would be 35 1/3" tall..
those 315/75/16 are 34 1/3" tall.. 12 1/4" wide tires on a 7" rim is over 5" difference.. You can take the chance if you like, but I wouldn't do that unless I was heading in a direct line to the rim store...
that second number is the trick- as you can see there is a pretty good difference in those tires..
