Transfer Case Slipping/ getting screwed over
I have a 99 dodge ram with a 360, not sure of transmission, but when I'm driving down the road my shifter for 4wd will clunk like it pops out and back in to 2wd. Sometimes the gear will pop out and sound like a grinding gear thats worse with speed and wont go away until I stop and it pops back into 2wd. It sounds like someone with a 5 speed shifting to the wrong gear or going into reverse when driving forward. I took it to my local shop and they said it was the U joints. So they replaced 2 of the 4, the u joints in the front wheels behind the brakes. They told me that this would fix the problem, and it didnt. I spent 700 bucks and the problem is still there. I told them in the beginning that the transfer case was popping out and they told me what they did would fix it. Not sure if I got screwed over but I called the shop and told them they did absolutely nothing to fix my problem and they only fixed a worn out part that didnt need to be replaced. What are my rights here? Im still waiting a call back..
Side note, they did run a diagnostic on the tranny and it came back with 2 faulty solenoids and worn out looking tranny fluid. I wish they would have fixed those parts for the same price rather than the u joints that didnt need fixed.
Any info would be great guys.

The screwed you. The U-joints have zero to do with your problem.
Drop your rear driveshaft, and pull the tailhousing off of the T-case. See that little grove on the output shaft? That's where the snap ring goes that holds everything in place. My bet? Your ain't there anymore.

I just fixed mine. Put a new snap ring on and tack welded it in place, it isn't going anywhere now.
I just got off the phone with the guy, he was flipping me all kinds of crap, telling my truck had seen better days and what not. There a reputable business that does good work when they know what to work on. He explained to me that he thought the vibration was coming from the ujoints because they were worn. I specifically explained to them that the t case was shaking and grinding. I told him to tow it to the shop and work on it, so there sending one out tomorrow morning, he also said he might be able to work something out and give me my money back for the parts and labor of the ujoints fix. I'll keep ya'll posted tomorrow when I figure it out. I'll have them check the snap ring first thing tomorrow.
