Default Deep snow + 4WD = SCARY NOISE!!!!!

So on my way to work I found myself facing a rather long snow drift on the highway, wasn't too deep and I had no problem getting through.

When i was going through the snow however any time I applied a lot of throttle the whole truck started shaking/ knocking. Is This a bad sound? It sounded /felt quite violent. I was in 4 Hi, and 4WD has always functioned normally. when i got out of the drift I was able to do highway speeds still in 4wd. Can anyone explain what was happening?

(sorry if this is a stupid question, truck is still rather new to me)

Felt like it originated in the rear drivers side. wouldn't a bad U joint cause constant problems rather that something intermittent?

It may have just been traction related.

Maybe. Depends on the load placed on it at the time.

I would think that if the problem were indeed in the rear, you would feel it more than just when you were in 4wd. Trouble with vibrations and such on a ladder frame vehicle is you can't always tell just where the problem originates......

If you can get the problem to repeat, see if you feel it more thru the steering, or the seat.

As in ice under the snow drift and the wheels(diffs) were rapidly transfering power from one to the other.

I had a scary noise this morning as I was driving, I thought I was just driving on a snow drift until I heard a crunch and my front end droped down.... Opps I was on the hood of a Saturn lol. Completely buried in snow!!

It only looked like a 2ft snow drift : )
