Failed Inspection!
I might just take it to where I go to school. They have a few automotive programs they gotta have some code readers there...If they wont let me use one then i will go your route or just write down my head unit settings and disconnect my battery. $
wow... inspectors in NJ sound like real hard asses. In PA I passed my last inspection with a shatterd mirror, busted tail light lens and with the CEL on... the only thing he asked about was the mirror and i told him i was picking one up off a junker come the weekend.
the people at autozone are stupid, i used to work at advanced and we read and cleared codes all day long....and this is in nj also. so the guy who said he could be fined is an idiot....what happens if you dont have a scanner to clear a code after you repair something? you go there and there supposed to do it lol.
Alright so I cleared my codes at home turned the truck on no check engine light. turned it off for a few min then got in to take a ride....the check engine light stayed on...i headed to autozone to read my codes. The code reader said no codes: pass the CEL was still on. the guy said he would shut off my light so he did. drove home with no light got home shut the truck off and turned the key back on without starting it. the light flashe and shut off along with the rest. i smiled and turned the key off then back on and wouldnt ya know it the damn thing stayed on. I am clueless now. you cant pass inspection with a CEL on or with a CEL removed. so it looks like im screwed.
The only thing that matters in NJ is the emissions and the damn CEL pretty much. I have a 3 foot crack across my windsheild
Save yourself a trip to the parts store and use the key trick to read your codes.

I don't know what year you have, but It should work on analog odometers also.
The CEL will blink out codes they are listed in a haynes manual
