Default rear end woes. grinding and groaning

stock 9 3/4 Chrysler, 3.55 with lsd. now i do not believe it to be a a gear problem, sounds more like a bearing. but maybe not that either.

its gotten worse over the last week. at all time there is a jingling coming from somewhere in the back while going down the road. almost like a chain dragging the ground (there isnt ive checked) or if you take a bunch of washers and jingle them together in your hand. every so often there is this awful grind, it doesnt change pitch, which leads me to believe its not a bearing.

i checked the fluid, it needs to be changed but i dont see any or feel any metal in it. i dont feel anything or notice any change in driving when i hear the noise, there isnt any whining.

with some searching i was thinking maybe outer shaft bearings. i plan on jacking her up and doing more intensive searching this weekend when it warms up and i ahve time.

any more ideas on what to look for, or how to check would be great. this has me stumped, and kinda scared...

ill try to capture the noise on video if i go back out tonight.

thanks guys

I would pull the cover, and have a close look at what all is going on in there..... Also, makes sure when you put it back together, you use the correct fluid for the LSD.

Pull your drums too..... have a look.

i was planning on doing both tomorrow.

its real intermittent, and happens between 45-70mph, does really matter if its cold or hot either. didnt do it last night but this morning it lasted for about 20seconds. its really scary. hopefully i can get some question answered tomorrow.

pull the diff cover and look for loose "clutch pack retaining clips" flopping around inside. its a common problem for them to break and fall out. most people get lucky and they fall to the bottom and stick to the magnet. some people get unlucky and loose the rear end.

yours might be in a position to be dragging. hopefully that's all it is.

from what vaughn was saying, the "clutch pack reataining clips" ? do those just snap into place? if that happens to be the problem

also which fluid is it? i ahve some 75 -90 (i think) but doesnt it need heavier?

If they came out..... there is probably another problem going on. Might just wanna get a rebuild kit for it, and go thru it.

a rebuild kit for the whole diff? or the lsd?

i tried to get a video but my exhaust is to loud to pick up on the camera. it doesnt sounds like anything that would be in fluid. its more of like vibrating roll of quarters real rapidly.

just for the lsd.

Did you find any obvious damage? any metal shavings? does your rear end work? (do both tires give you traction??)
