Default A/C problem

So I'm starting to think I've got an issue with my A/C again. Now it's winter so obviously, I'm not using it, but I had the truck running with the heat on low today and I was outside of the truck checking the air in the tires. I noticed the A/C compressor was kicking on and off like when it's low on R134a. I turned it to A/C with it going to the floor and top vents and it still was kicking on and off. I even turned it all the way to the 4th notch and it still did it. Then I switched the switch to Max AC instead of of the top and low vents and it started going constantly and not kicking off. Is it safe to assume here that I've got a leak somewhere?

According to the FSM it could be:

* Low refrigerant
* Faulty AC low pressure switch
* Faulty PCM

On my truck, the PO said that he was having problems with the AC, and that it was fixed with a new switch, which should be relatively inexpensive (less than 20 bucks).

Good luck,
Cartman

Mine has always done that, even after I got it refilled with refrigerant and checked out by a shop. I have cold air, and I figured it was normal.

Wait, so yours kicks on and off too? I thought that was a sign of not having enough R134a in there? I'm just not sure why it doesn't kick on and off if on Max A/C though.

It is completely normal for the compressor to cycle like that with the heat on.

If the 134a is low it will kick on/off about every 10-15 seconds. Get a few cans and fill her up. It should stop cycling like that (and blow ice cold, if it isn't already)

It might also be the AC pressure switch, as stated earlier. You can short it by putting a paper clip inside the switch prongs and see if the compressor stops cycling rapidly. If it stops, then you know the pressure switch is bad.

It is more than likely low on 134. Just refill it

Read again. He's NOT using the AC.

Doesn't matter, it shouldn't cycle like that with heat OR the A/C.

If it cycles like that constantly, the compressor will eventually burn out. Not a very cheap part ....

Wrong! The compressor cycles like that even when the heat is used to 1, keep the system lubricated, and 2, to aid in the removal of condensation from the interior of the cab.
