Default Weird transmission problem...

Have a 96' Ram 2500 and it started having trouble shifting. It goes from first to second fine and then will only go to third after it was just in park or neutral. After it has gone to third once it won't go back unless I shift into neutral while it is in second then it usually goes to third. Just to day I stared having problems with second gear. It would get stuck in first until I went to neutral and back to drive then it would go to second, but completely stopped going to third. Not sure what to try... Thanks

only cost me $133 but i already had all the parts and info, now my trans is shifting like a dream

I'm looking at different posts on different sites and a lot of people seem to have my problem, but they have a lot of different solutions like the governor sensor, solenoid, solenoid pack, and even replacing the whole valve body. Where should I start first? Is getting to the solenoid pack and governor sensor a Saturday afternoon and a 6 pack project or a time to go to the shop job? Thanks

Drop the pan, change fluid, filter, governor pressure sensor AND solenoid, and adjust the bands. Should be end of problem.

No need to drop valve body, can do it in an afternoon, and a six pack. (or, a 12 pack if you have a friend around to keep you company.)

I'm having a similar issue with my 99 Ram 2500 5.9V8 4x4 (automatic trans). I have 285/75R16 tires. Sometimes it'll shift just fine, but then there are times when she won't shift to 3rd. Sometimes manual shifting from 2nd to D or letting off the gas will "correct" this hiccup, but not always. If I pull over and put it in Park then back to Drive, it seems to operate fine. There doesn't seem to be any issues from 3rd to 4th. I just did plugs, wires, and oil. Checked the tranny fluid and it looks and smells fine. Should I start with a fluid and filter change along with governor pressure sensor and solenoid? I wouldn't have the first clue on adjusting bands. Don't know if it's related, but it started doing this after I replaced the brake line to the front driver's side. Probably the standard case of "fix one thing and something else goes to sh*t", lol.

Yes on the Gov solenoid and sensor. As far as the band adjustment goes, you'll need an inch pound torque wrench and download the FSM from the FAQ/DIY section and read up on doing the adjustment. And only do it if you feel confident. Done wrong you'll ruin the tranny.
