Default Steering Box Adjustment!?!?

I have an '00 Ram 1500, and the steering is very loose and its coming from gear box. I've tightened it up about 3 times using the adjustment screw on top, but it just gets loose again. I was wondering how far i can keep trying to adjust it, of if i should try something else, don't really have the funds for a new one.

My Ram is the same way, always has been, I feel like an old person constantly moving the wheel to keep it straight. Over time I replaced the entire front end, pittman arm, Idler arm, all the bushing, links, sway bar. Everything.
Adjusted the steering box, still nothing.

I saw this thread the other day and am considering it. https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...ering-fix.html
I need to do some other things first. My Ram just hit the road yesterday for the first time in almost two years..
(had it long-term stored)

I am having the same problem with my 01 ram sport. I am ordering this steering fix today. Heard alot of people talk good about it and that it helped them. I to was ready to replace all those parts. But I am going to wait till I get this part in and see what it does.

There are two adjustments that need to be done on the steering box to do it "right".... procedure is detail in the FSM, that you can download from the FAQ section here. Even so, these boxes get sloppy, and there is only so much you can do with adjustments, to compensate for the worn internals. Granted, you can make it much better than what it is, but, don't expect to be able to restore it to 'like new' steering. Only way to do that is replace the box with a NEW aftermarket unit. Replacing the existing box with a reman just introduces the same problems, and may not be better than what you already have.

The Rock Solid fix deals with slop at the bottom of the steering column. Grab ahold of your steering shaft up by the column, and give it a shake, if there is play, that fix will help. But, it will in no way compensate for a sloppy box. (that just sounds.... wrong......)

Section 19, Steering, starting on page 19-16, under "installation". Lower right on the page. Adjustments is right below that procedure, and continues on the next page.

Yeah the slop is not in the shaft or column, its in the box. I have about an 1/8 turn of slack which doesn't sound like a lot BUT it feels like a lot.

I was looking at doing this today and if I am going to do all that, I might as well replace it.

If you have the cash, that is certainly the best way to fix it. Don't bother with just a reman, or stock replacement unit though, some of them are worse than what is already on your truck...... get a quality replacement unit, like a RedHead, or similar.
