Torque converter not locking?
I have a 99 dodge ram 1500 5.9l 4x4 and i have a code reader, the same one that advanced uses, I test my truck every now and then and the other day i hooked it up (parked not started) and ran the test with no error codes, then i plugged it up, started the truck and went about 1-2 miles, it read the code torque converter clutch, that was the only error code. My truck has a problem with getting stuck at a high rpm rate, for example: I rev it up to about 2500 to 3000 rpm's and it and it tends to stick their. I have to shut the truck off and restart it sometimes, other than that it runs good. it only stick when idle or after driving at high speeds and putting it out of gear when stopping. i thought maybe IAC sensor was seemed up.
Lets just say since you bought it. Be glad the tranny didnt go out 50 miles after you did. That happened to me in my last truck and I had to drop more 3g into her
We're still paying that off....
Believe me, as much as you dont want to spend the money. Your going to have to eventually. Im afraid to say.

Ok guys here is an update. I took it to the stealership and they told me the transmission needed to be rebuilt and they wanted $3500! I decided I waned another opinion so I took it to a transmission shop my mechanic suggested and they drove it and scanned it and said just replacing the tcc/od solenoid would fix it. They replaced it and now the torque converter is locking (at last I think it is. Sometimes its hard to tell where I live with all the hills) the rpm's are much lower at cruising speeds. 60mph is now at about 1600rpm and 80mph is right at 2000-2100rpm.
Another update. I drove my truck to work on Friday and the check engine light came back on. I checked it and it p1740 again!
I took it back to the shop today and he checked it out and he says the torque converter IS locking when the tranny is cold but NOT locking when its hot. He thinks the valve body is warped. I asked him if I should rebuild the tranny and he said no (Can you believe that! A transmission shop said I didn't need a rebuild!) Anyways I told him to go ahead and replace the valve body.
My theory is that the torque converting wasn't locking causing a lot of excess heat which warped the valve body.
If this doesn't fix it I guess the next step is to rebuild the whole dam thing
